Scottish Welfare Fund

From April 2013, changes to the DWP Social Fund scheme meant that Crisis Loans and Community Care Grants stopped. These have been replaced by the Scottish Welfare Fund (SWF) which is delivered by local authorities. The Scottish Government is currently working on permanent arrangements for the fund. Crisis grants are made to help people cope with unexpected expenses arising out of an emergency or a disaster. Community care grants are made to help people on a low income live independently in the community or to ease pressure on families.

  • Applications for Community Care Grants or Crisis Grants from the Scottish Welfare Fund should be made through the local Council. A list of contact details and web addresses for each local Council’s Welfare Fund information is available on the Scottish Government’s website here.
  • More information on applications, eligibility and applications is available from Citizens Advice.
  • The Scottish Government has produced a leaflet explaining how to challenge a Scottish Welfare Fund decision.
